Constitution
SLAM uniVERSE @ UCLA is committed to fostering creative expression through poetry and performance. Through the creative writing process, we encourage students to freely express their emotions, ideas, and views and share them with others. We also want to facilitate a platform where students can not only display their poetic talents, but also create an atmosphere of appreciation for poetry and literature.
Why We Exist
Attending a huge University is one of the most exciting and terrifying times in our lives. Our founders all realized that they no longer practiced the creative outlets they once enjoyed. Drowned in a competitive environment where career building and academic achievement are prioritized, we often forget what we once loved and enjoyed. Additionally, some of us found that we became reluctant to try creative activities due to the stigma of the arts being 'useless.' The arts have shaped this world, and it started with creatives like you. SLAM uniVERSE was created in order to provide a creative outlet to remind students that they aren't just defined by being a student. You are the painters, writers, musicians and poets of this world.
What We Offer
We offer a place for you to lead and host your own unique creative workshop. Yes, YOU can be the professor for once. Whether you specialize in short stories, sonnets, poetry, or performance we want you to share your knowledge (just fill out the form!). We also plan to go to and participate in Open Mics across Los Angeles including "Da Poetry Lounge," the biggest weekly open mic in the country! You will have the opportunity to witness, learn, and even help young poets through "GetLit-Words Ignite." We also provide opportunities to become a judge at Slam Competitions across California. In collaboration with the Cultural Arts Commission and UCLA Residential Life Arts Engagement, we will also help you prepare for your slam piece from beginning to end! Interested in hosting your very own slam event? We'll work with you! Want to request a slam poet to invite on campus? We'll work with you too! We have access to the resources, just tell us what you need.
