Alexandro Guerrero- President of Logistics and Funding
"I've never thought about myself as a poet or a writer. I was always into Math and Science. However, when I met people who wrote poetry, I began to think that I could be a poet too! I think people tend to categorize themselves too much which causes them to not try new things. In reality, everything, including juxtapositions, intersect; that in itself is poetic."
Alexandro Guerrero is a fourth-year Pre-Health and Sociology Major with a Minor in Global Health. As the first in his family to be admitted to a university, Alexandro has experienced first-hand the difficulties of figuring out the educational process alone. On top of that, Alexandro was the only one in his high school in Northern California who was admitted into UCLA which was even more nerve-wracking! Luckily, Alexandro uses music as his creative outlet to help him cope with these obstacles. In fact, Alexandro was an avid member and leader of his high school's orchestra, jazz band, marching band, drumline, live theatre band, and other musical ensembles. He has been nationally recognized as an accomplished musician and has written award-winning musical pieces. Alexandro has also been featured on the national news for his musical accomplishments!
His interest in slam poetry arose when he was asked to compose instrumental music for a spoken word piece. Alexandro loved the interaction of music and poetry and how each creative piece became more meaningful and impactful when done together. In his exploration of the interaction of music and poetry, he uncovered the poems of the Harlem Renaissance which demands that poems are read musically. By reading more poems and discovering more music-incorporated slam poetry, Alexandro hopes to one day write and perform a poem with his own musical composition.
He carried on his musical interests at UCLA as a band member for the "Solid Gold Sound" where he found a spirited and committed Bruin community. Alexandro volunteers to help mobilize elementary-high school students from the inner city to higher education. He is also a member of the Society for Physical and Occupational Therapy where he volunteers with children with disabilities in sports-related activities. As a Senior, Alexandro is in the process of studying for the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) and finalizing his applications for Graduate School! With all these responsibilities piling up, it is a good thing that he has music and poetry at his side.
